Anatomical Sex vs. Gender Identity

     Even before a child is born, most people are curious as to whether the baby will be a boy or a girl. Pregnant women and their partners hear far too often, “What are you having?” The baby shower is themed in colors associated with a particular sex. The baby’s room is designed based upon the sex. Because of socially accepted gender-roles, or stereotypes/expectations, knowing someone’s sex seems like a simple way to understand the person. The opposite may be truer. [.....]

     It is beneficial for treatment to be sought when a trauma takes place. Addressing traumatic events early on can significantly reduce effects of trauma to a person’s emotional and social functioning. When a person experiences a traumatic experience they develop a heightened sense of awareness and reactivity to future events that take place. Working through difficult thoughts and emotions associated with the traumatic event can decrease the intensity of the emotional reactivity and distress on a person long term. [.....]

Sexual Dysfunction, Dissatisfaction, Infidelity, and Discord

As a sex and gender therapist I work with heterosexual, gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and intersex couples. Each of these groups experience infidelity, dissatisfaction, dysfunction, and/or discord in the relationship for a variety of reasons. I have observed more and more that sex is used as a psychological shorthand, allowing people to feel physical close when they can't seem to feel emotionally, spiritually, existentially close. This shorthand also plays itself out in terms of sexual frequency, quality, intensity, and duration. Couples interpret changes in these areas as a commentary on how the other feels about them, the relationship, etc. [.....]
